KiwiRail and Neogine

KiwiRail and Neogine Design approached Peek Exhibition to provide four professionally branded, engaging and interactive shipping containers, each with a different theme, design and individual content. The containers were themed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of KiwiRail in New Zealand and were to be transported nationwide by train carriages to numerous North and South island stations, delivering the experience to the public and KiwiRail customers nationally.

The challenges for Peek included having a short lead time to coordinate the purchase of clean, new waterproof shipping containers, preparing each for approved electrics, fixing graphic panels and ceilings, installing walls and ceilings complete with lights, interactive screens and displays and models/props, which would withstand the immense vibration of the containers moving on a train nationwide.

Furthermore, as each container was effectively an interactive and engaging consumer display, each required safe pedestrian and wheelchair/pram ramp access on and off the containers. To complicate that further, each station the train visited had differing platform height which meant access equipment needed to be flexible.

KiwiRail’s design agency, Neogine, provided the graphic themes which Peek translated into CAD plans for each container, then set about wiring, installing ceilings, lighting, printing and installing interior panels, floor graphics, cabinetry, AV & electronics and KiwiRail collectables and models to each. Exteriors were also painted and had graphics applied to announce each theme from the outside.

The containers were each fitted out and delivered over a four week production schedule, on time and on budget. The Peek team worked with the KiwiRail team on an initial trial set up where processes for packing in and packing up each display were explained and understood, before the first trade customer and public event in Auckland in October 2013. Roadcases were made for protecting the AV gear which could be safely stored while in transit. The containers then embarked on a tour of the country over the following month or so before returning to Wellington.

KiwiRail provided a description of working with Peek Exhibition on this experiential marketing programme which can be found in our testimonials on this site.
